Need a Caribbean adventure but feeling a little short on cash?
Old San Juan, Puerto Rico should be on your must-visit list!
Why not start by getting to know the neighborhood first?
1. Stroll through history with an Old San Juan walking tour.
The cobblestone streets are amazing! Listen closely and you might hear their whispered tales of the past. Check out the surroundings at your own pace.
(Just take a map or make sure your phone has connectivity so you don’t get lost! Not that that would be a terrible thing…)
Marvel at the fantastic colonial architecture. Pause and feel the intrigue deep within the historic forts nestled right at the edge of this city (and often steps from the ocean)!
Don’t miss: Iconic landmarks El Morro and La Fortaleza.
You don’t need a guide. Let the day take you where it will.
Perhaps to a local bar for an iconic rum and Coke? 🙂
2. Discover the street art scene.
No need to spend time in stuffy museums! Old San Juan’s street art scene is a canvas of the heart and soul of the Puerto Rican people. You’ll discover murals that tell stories of the island’s heritage and contemporary struggles.
Why I adore street art:
It’s such a fantastic way to experience local art without spending a penny.
They make drool-worthy Insta photo backdrops.
3. Relax at Plaza de Armas.
Plaza de Armas is the main square and a hub of activity. Here, you can people-watch, enjoy the shade of the trees, or simply relax with a good book.
Breathe in the buzz…
You just might run across a local performance.
It’s a great spot to mingle. Why not see if you can remember that Spanish from high school?
4. Uncover the secret spots in Old San Juan.
Tucked away from the bustling streets, you can find serene courtyards and secluded corners. Make a beeline for the Caleta de las Monjas, a small and often overlooked plaza with stunning views.
What an amazing spot to reflect on your journey. It’s a perfect example of the things to do in Old San Juan for free, allowing you to soak in the ambiance and still have money for dinner.
Another secret spot is the Callejón de la Capilla, a narrow alleyway known for its vibrant murals and historical significance. Most tourists miss this, but it’s a fantastic place for a leisurely stroll.
The travel memories I cherish the most are the times I wandered off the beaten path. These hidden spots are ideal for the solo traveler looking to escape the tourist trail and immerse themselves in the local culture.
5. Feel like a local: cultural workshops and events.
Participating in cultural workshops is not only a great way to learn about Puerto Rican heritage but also to connect with locals and fellow travelers. Many of these workshops, such as those for bomba dancing or mask-making, are available at little to no cost, making them accessible things to do for free. They provide a hands-on experience that goes beyond the typical tourist activities and allows for a deeper understanding of the island’s culture.
Old San Juan is home to numerous cultural events throughout the year, from festivals to open-air concerts. These events are often free and are a fantastic way for singles of any age to make some new lifelong friends.
Whether it’s the lively San Sebastián Street Festival or the traditional Noche de San Juan celebrations, these events are a must-do for anyone looking to fully immerse themselves in the spirit of Puerto Rico. Keep an eye on local event calendars or ask the concierge at your hotel to make sure you don’t miss out on anything.
6. Visit the San Juan Cathedral.
The San Juan Cathedral is not only a place of worship but also a piece of history, with its stunning architecture and peaceful ambiance.
Take it all in!
The cathedral is one of the oldest buildings in San Juan and is free to enter.
It’s a quiet escape from the bustling city streets.
7. Savor the flavors: local cuisine sampling.
After all that walking and dancing (and laughing!) you’re sure to be starved. From food stalls to cafes, vegans to carnivores, there are plenty of options to enjoy authentic Puerto Rican dishes.
Bite into it:
Sampling local food lets you dive deeper into the culture.
I tried mofongo for the first time and it was delicious. They made a special vegetarian version just for me!
8. Sunset at El Morro.
The historic fort of El Morro is not only a significant landmark but also an ideal spot for watching the sunset. The ocean views are spectacular and create a serene end to your day. Keep the camera handy!
Wish you were here:
The sunset at El Morro is breathtaking experience (and free)!
It’s a popular spot, though, so be prepared to make some new friends.
You’ll never forget the colors and the sea breeze!
9. I love the nightlife.
Don’t miss a chance to experience the local music and dance scene.
Many bars have live bands playing salsa and reggaeton.
